What Is Ametrine?
Ametrine is a natural quartz that grows with both purple amethyst and golden citrine zones in one crystal, often with a crisp line where the two colours meet. Both colours come from traces of iron. As the crystal grew, differences in temperature across it left the iron in two different states, so one side turned purple and the other gold.
Almost all natural ametrine comes from one place: the Anahí mine in eastern Bolivia. Legend says the mine was part of a dowry when a 17th-century Spanish conquistador married Anahí, a princess of the local Ayoreo people, and that ametrine was her parting gift to him. Whether or not the story is true, the stone still carries her name in its home.
Ametrine Meaning
Ametrine is a stone of balance. It brings together the calm, intuitive energy of amethyst and the bright, confident energy of citrine, so it's said to help your head and your heart, your dreams and your plans, work together. Its key qualities are clarity, joy, creativity, spiritual growth, meditation focus, balance, strength, abundance and positive energy.
Ametrine Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, ametrine is a bridge between the crown chakra and the solar plexus: between insight and action. Many people use it when they know what they want but need the confidence to go after it, or when they're full of energy but need a calmer, wiser direction. It's a lovely stone for meditation, for journaling and for anyone who feels pulled in two directions.
Ametrine Properties and Benefits
- Balance: the classic two-in-one stone, linked with finding the middle ground.
- Clarity: associated with clear decisions and seeing both sides of a situation.
- Creativity: citrine's sunny spark meets amethyst's imagination.
- Positivity: linked with an upbeat, hopeful energy. See our guide to crystals for energy.
- Meditation: a favourite for focusing a busy mind.
Ametrine Chakras and Zodiac Signs
Ametrine connects the crown chakra (amethyst) with the solar plexus (citrine). It's most often linked with Libra, the sign of the scales, which suits a stone that is all about balance. Amethyst lovers born in February and citrine fans born in November often adore it too. Find more pairings in our zodiac crystal guide.
How to Use Ametrine
- Wear it: an ametrine necklace keeps both energies close all day.
- Meditate with it: hold it when you want calm focus rather than sleepy calm.
- Keep it on your desk: a good companion for creative work and big decisions.
- Pair it: ametrine with clear quartz to amplify it, or with smoky quartz for a grounded, quartz-family trio.
Is My Ametrine Real?
Natural ametrine usually shows two distinct zones of colour, often with a soft or sharp boundary, and the shades are rarely perfectly even. Because nearly all of it comes from Bolivia, very cheap, very bright ametrine in large quantities is worth questioning: some is lab-grown or made by heat-treating amethyst. Glass imitations tend to have round air bubbles and perfectly uniform colour.
Cleansing and Caring for Ametrine
At 7 on the Mohs scale, ametrine is happy to be worn every day. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Keep it out of strong, direct sunlight, as both amethyst and citrine can fade with long exposure, and charge it by moonlight instead. Our guide to cleansing crystals and guide to charging crystals explain each method.
