How to Charge Crystals: 9 Simple Ways to Recharge Your Stones

How to charge crystals: crescent moon crystal necklaces under a full moon

You've cleansed your crystals, popped them back on the windowsill, and now you're wondering: what next? That's where charging comes in. If cleansing is like giving your stones a bath, charging is like letting them sunbathe afterwards, topping them back up with fresh, bright energy so they're ready to work with you again.

Here are nine simple ways to charge crystals, from the classic full moon to a quick breath and an intention, plus how often to do it and which stones need a little extra care.

What Does Charging a Crystal Mean?

In crystal lore, stones absorb and hold energy. Over time, especially if you wear a piece every day or keep it somewhere busy, that energy is said to become dull or cluttered. Cleansing clears out the old energy. Charging fills the stone back up with fresh energy, and programming (or activating) gives that energy a direction by setting an intention.

So the usual order is cleanse, charge, then programme. If you haven't cleansed your stones yet, start with our complete guide to cleansing crystals.

When Should You Charge Your Crystals?

  • When you first bring a new crystal home.
  • After cleansing, every time.
  • Once a month, ideally at the full moon, for stones you use regularly.
  • When a stone feels heavy, dull or ‘quiet’ in your hand, or simply when your intuition tells you to.

9 Ways to Charge Crystals

1. Full Moon Charging

The most popular method of all. Place your crystals on a windowsill or outside on the night of the full moon and leave them until morning. Moonlight is gentle, so it's safe for almost every stone, including those that fade in the sun. Many people make it a monthly ritual, setting fresh intentions as they lay their stones out. Moon lovers might enjoy our crescent moon necklaces, too.

2. Sunlight

A few hours of morning sun gives crystals a bright, energising charge. It suits stones linked with fire and the sun, such as carnelian, citrine, tiger's eye and pyrite. Keep it short, ideally no more than two or three hours, and avoid strong midday sun.

Keep these out of the sun: amethyst, rose quartz, fluorite, aventurine, kunzite, celestite and other pale or purple stones can fade. Clear quartz can also focus sunlight like a magnifying glass, so never leave it near anything flammable.

3. Earth

Bury your crystal in the garden or a pot of soil for a day or a few days to let the earth recharge it. It's especially lovely for grounding stones like smoky quartz, obsidian and red jasper. Mark the spot so you can find it again, and avoid this for soft or water-sensitive stones.

4. Crystal Clusters and Geodes

Large clusters, especially amethyst and clear quartz, are said to radiate energy in every direction. Simply rest smaller stones and jewellery on top of a cluster or inside a geode overnight. It's gentle, easy and safe for all stones. See our crystal clusters.

5. Selenite

Selenite is famous for cleansing and charging other crystals. Lay your stones on a selenite slab or bowl, or next to a selenite wand, for a few hours or overnight. Selenite itself should never go in water, as it dissolves.

6. Clear Quartz

Known as the master crystal, clear quartz is said to amplify energy. Place a quartz point or tumblestone next to your other crystals, or wear it alongside them. Our clear quartz silk necklace layers beautifully with other stones.

7. Sound

Singing bowls, tuning forks, bells or even chanting are said to charge crystals with vibration. Ring the bowl or bell close to your stones and let the sound wash over them for a minute or two. It's perfect for charging a whole collection at once.

8. Breath and Intention

No moon, no sun, no selenite? Hold your crystal, close your eyes and breathe slowly onto it a few times while picturing it filling with bright light. Your own energy and focus are said to be one of the most powerful charges of all.

9. Plants and Flowers

Nestle your crystals among healthy houseplants or a bunch of fresh flowers overnight. Green, growing energy is said to be wonderfully restorative, especially for heart stones such as rose quartz and malachite.

How to Programme (Activate) a Crystal

Once your crystal is charged, give it a job. Hold it in both hands, take a few deep breaths and say your intention out loud, for example ‘Help me feel calm and confident at work’ or ‘Protect my energy today’. Keep it short, positive and in the present tense. You can programme a crystal for a single day or a whole season. Our guide to crystals for manifesting has more ideas.

Charging Crystals FAQs

How do I charge my crystals for the first time?

Cleanse your new crystal first, then leave it under the full moon or on a selenite slab overnight. Finish by holding it and setting an intention.

How often should I charge my crystals?

Once a month is a good rhythm for stones you use often, and the full moon is a lovely reminder. Charge them more often if they feel dull or after a particularly busy time.

Can I charge crystals without a full moon?

Yes. The waxing moon, a few hours of gentle morning sun, a selenite slab, a crystal cluster, sound or simply your breath and intention all work.

Can you charge crystals in a window?

Absolutely. A windowsill is perfect for moonlight. For sunlight, keep it brief and move fade-prone stones such as amethyst and rose quartz out of direct sun.

What is the difference between cleansing and charging crystals?

Cleansing clears away old energy, while charging fills a crystal back up with fresh energy. Most people cleanse first, then charge, then set an intention.

Do crystals need charging if I wear them every day?

Crystal jewellery you wear every day is said to benefit from a monthly cleanse and charge. Lay it out under the full moon overnight and it's ready to go again.
