What Is Aventurine?

Aventurine is a form of quartz (strictly speaking a quartzite) packed with tiny platy crystals of other minerals. In green aventurine those flecks are usually fuchsite, a green chromium-rich mica, and they catch the light to give the stone its glitter. Gem lovers call this shimmer aventurescence.

The name has a lovely story. In 18th-century Venice, glassmakers on the island of Murano are said to have dropped copper filings into molten glass by accident, creating a sparkling glass they called avventurina, from a ventura, meaning by chance. That glass is what we now call goldstone, and the natural stone with the same sparkle was named after it. Most aventurine today comes from India, with more found in Brazil, Russia and Chile.

Aventurine Meaning

Aventurine is the stone of opportunity and good luck. It's associated with optimism, abundance and the courage to say yes when something new comes along, which is why it's a favourite for job interviews, first dates, exams and fresh starts. Green Aventurine Meaning

Green aventurine is the classic and the most popular colour. It's a heart chakra stone, linked with kindness, growth and an easy-going, hopeful outlook. Many people see it as a stone of prosperity, a reminder that good things grow from small, steady steps. It sits happily alongside the other money stones in our guide to crystals for money and abundance.

Aventurine Spiritual Meaning

Spiritually, aventurine is said to soften a worried heart and open you up to new possibilities. It's a gentle, cheerful energy rather than a dramatic one: think of it as a friend who reminds you that the door you're nervous about might lead somewhere wonderful. Many people hold it in meditation when they want to let go of old disappointments and make room for something new.

How to Use Aventurine

  • Wear it: an aventurine necklace keeps its lucky energy close to your heart.
  • Carry it: slip a tumblestone into your pocket or purse for interviews, exams and first days.
  • Keep it near your money: many people keep aventurine in their wallet or by the till for steady abundance.
  • Pair it: aventurine with citrine for a double dose of prosperity, or with rose quartz for a softer, heart-led pairing.

Aventurine vs Jade: How to Tell the Difference

Green aventurine is often mistaken for jade. The easiest clue is the sparkle: tilt aventurine under a light and you'll usually see glittering flecks, while jade has a smooth, waxy glow. Aventurine also feels slightly grainy where it's been polished. Be aware that some very evenly coloured "aventurine" is dyed quartz or glass; natural aventurine has gentle variations in colour.

Cleansing and Caring for Aventurine

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, aventurine is tough enough for everyday wear. Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, and keep it out of strong sunlight for long periods, as its colour can soften. Cleanse it with moonlight, sound or smoke. Our guide to cleansing crystals and guide to charging crystals explain each method.
