What Is Fluorite?
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a mineral that grows in beautiful cubes and octahedrons and comes in more colours than almost any other. Its name comes from the Latin fluere, meaning to flow, because miners used it to help metal ores melt and flow during smelting. Fluorite even gave its name to fluorescence: many pieces glow blue or purple under ultraviolet light.
Britain has its own famous fluorite. Blue John, a purple and yellow banded fluorite, is found only in the hills around Castleton in Derbyshire, where it has been mined and carved into bowls, vases and jewellery since the 1700s.
Fluorite Meaning
Fluorite is known as the stone of focus, and sometimes as the genius stone. It's associated with clear thinking, organisation and bringing order to chaos, which makes it a natural companion for exams, study, creative projects and busy desks. Where some crystals feel dreamy, fluorite feels like opening a window and letting fresh air into a stuffy room.
Fluorite Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, fluorite is said to clear mental clutter and protect against overwhelm. It's linked with the higher chakras, especially the third eye, helping intuition and logic work together rather than against each other. Many people also use fluorite to cleanse their aura and to stay centred when surrounded by other people's energy. Its many colours each carry their own flavour, which is why rainbow fluorite, with all of them in one stone, is so popular.

Blue John Fluorite Meaning
Blue John is Britain's own fluorite and one of the rarest stones in the world. It is found only in Treak Cliff and the Blue John Cavern near Castleton in Derbyshire, where its bands of violet, deep blue and honey yellow have been mined by hand, in small amounts, since the 1700s. Its name is often said to come from the French bleu-jaune, blue-yellow, after those colours.
Blue John shares fluorite's meaning of focus and clarity, with a softer, more grounded feel. It's linked with emotional balance, intuition, strength, harmony, growth and calm, and every piece carries a little of the Peak District with it.
Fluorite Chakras and Zodiac Signs
Fluorite's chakra depends on its colour: green for the heart, blue for the throat, and purple for the third eye and crown. It's most closely linked with Pisces and Capricorn. Find your own stones in our zodiac crystal guide.
How to Use Fluorite
- Keep it on your desk: a fluorite tower, sphere or tumblestone next to your laptop or books is a classic. See our crystal balls and spheres.
- Wear it: a fluorite necklace or bracelet keeps its focus with you all day. Our rainbow fluorite bead bracelet is an easy everyday piece.
- Study with it: hold fluorite for a minute before you start revising and set an intention for the session.
- Pair it: fluorite with amethyst for calm focus, or with clear quartz to amplify it.
Is My Fluorite Real?
Real fluorite is fairly soft, so it often shows tiny chips or scratches along its edges, and its colours sit in natural bands or zones rather than an even tint. Many pieces glow under a UV torch. Glass imitations are harder, perfectly even in colour and often contain round air bubbles.
Cleansing and Caring for Fluorite
At just 4 on the Mohs scale, fluorite is soft and can chip or crack if knocked, so wear it with a little care and store it on its own. Keep it out of strong sunlight, as its colours can fade, and avoid hot water, harsh chemicals and long soaks. Cleanse it with moonlight, sound or selenite, then recharge it under the full moon. Our guide to cleansing crystals and guide to charging crystals explain each method.
