What Is Onyx?
Onyx is a type of chalcedony, a member of the quartz family made of crystals far too small to see. True onyx forms in straight, parallel bands, classically black and white; when the bands are red-brown and white it's called sardonyx. Most of the solid black and green onyx you see in jewellery is chalcedony that has been coloured to a deep, even shade, a practice that goes back to Roman times and gives the smooth, inky look onyx is famous for.
Its name comes from the Greek onyx, meaning fingernail. Legend says that one day, while Venus lay resting by a river, mischievous Cupid trimmed her nails with an arrowhead and left the clippings on the sand. The Fates, unwilling to let any part of a goddess perish, turned them to stone. Banded onyx does look a little like the pale half-moon of a fingernail.
Onyx Meaning
Onyx is a stone of strength, protection and willpower. It's associated with self-control, discipline and staying power, the kind of quiet resilience that helps you finish what you started. It's said to absorb heavy energy and keep you grounded when life feels noisy. Think of it as a steady hand on your shoulder: not dramatic, just there, reminding you that you're stronger than you think.
Onyx Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, onyx is a grounding and protective stone. It's linked with the root chakra, which governs feeling safe and secure, and it's used to shield your energy and help you stay centred during change. Many people turn to onyx when they want to let go of old habits or step into a new chapter with confidence. Its dark, reflective surface also makes it a calm focus for meditation.
Black Onyx Meaning
Black onyx is the classic. It's associated with protection, grounding and inner strength, and it's a favourite for anyone who wants to feel more self-assured and in control. It's linked with the root chakra and with steady, earthy energy. Our black onyx vegan silk necklace is a simple, everyday way to wear it, and our hand knotted rainbow moonstone, ruby and black onyx necklace pairs it with brighter stones for a little light in the dark.
Green Onyx Meaning
Green onyx brings onyx's strength to the heart. It's linked with the heart chakra and associated with honesty, clarity and courage in matters of the heart, helping head and heart work together. It's a lovely stone for speaking your truth, building self-love and staying calm with tricky people. Try our green onyx vegan silk necklace.

Black onyx is linked with the root chakra and green onyx with the heart chakra. Onyx is most closely associated with bold, big-hearted Leo and determined Capricorn, two signs that know a thing or two about willpower. Find your own stones in our zodiac crystal guide.
How to Use Onyx
- Wear it: an onyx necklace or bracelet keeps its grounding energy with you all day. Our red rudraksha and black onyx bracelet pairs it with rudraksha seeds, traditionally used in meditation.
- Meditate with it: hold a piece of onyx when you want to feel rooted, or gaze into its dark surface to quieten a busy mind.
- Set an intention: onyx is a good companion for a new habit or goal. Hold it, say your intention out loud and wear it as a reminder.
- Pair it: onyx with labradorite and amethyst, as in our hand knotted labradorite, amethyst and black onyx necklace, or with obsidian for extra protection.
Is My Onyx Real?
Onyx is hard (6.5 to 7) and feels cool and heavy for its size; glass and plastic feel lighter and warmer. Solid black onyx is very often coloured chalcedony, which is the normal way black onyx has been made for centuries, so an even, inky black is not a warning sign. If a stone sold as onyx scratches easily with a steel blade, it may be glass, resin or Mexican onyx (calcite) instead.
Cleansing and Caring for Onyx
Onyx is durable enough for everyday wear. Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry it well. Avoid harsh chemicals, perfume and ultrasonic cleaners, and store it apart from softer stones. To refresh its energy, try moonlight, sound, smoke or a selenite plate. Our guide to cleansing crystals and guide to charging crystals explain each method.
