What Is Celestite?

Celestite (also called celestine) is a strontium sulphate mineral that usually grows as clusters of pale blue crystals inside geodes. Its name comes from the Latin caelestis, meaning heavenly, after its sky-blue colour. Some of the most beautiful clusters come from Madagascar, and it is also found in Mexico, Poland and, perhaps surprisingly, near Bristol in England, where it was once mined for its strontium.

That strontium is the same element that gives fireworks their bright red colour. It's a lovely contrast: a quiet blue crystal holding the secret of a crimson sky.

Celestite is a stone of calm, peace and gentle guidance. It's associated with slowing down, softening a busy mind and creating a quiet, harmonious atmosphere wherever it sits. Celestite Spiritual Meaning

Spiritually, celestite is known as the angel stone. It's linked with the higher chakras and is often used by people who want to feel connected to their angels, spirit guides or simply a sense of something bigger than themselves. Many keep it by the bed for peaceful evenings and vivid dreams, or use it in meditation, prayer and quiet reflection. It's a soft, kind energy: less a lightning bolt, more a deep breath.

Is My Celestite Real?

Natural celestite usually grows as clusters of glassy, pale blue blade-like crystals inside a rough rock geode, and its colour is soft rather than bright. It's noticeably heavy for its size, because strontium is a dense element. Very bright or evenly coloured pieces may be dyed, and very cheap "celestite" can be blue glass or dyed calcite.

Cleansing and Caring for Celestite

Celestite is delicate. At just 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, its crystals scratch and chip easily, so it's best enjoyed as a display piece rather than worn every day. Keep it out of water, as it can dissolve slightly and lose its sparkle, and keep it out of strong sunlight, which can fade its blue. Dust it with a soft, dry brush and cleanse it with sound, moonlight or smoke. Our guide to cleansing crystals explains each method.
