What Is Chrysoprase?
Chrysoprase is a green variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz made of crystals far too small to see. Its colour comes from tiny traces of nickel, which is why it has that fresh, slightly glowing green that no other chalcedony quite matches. Its name comes from the Greek chrysos, gold, and prason, leek, a rather less romantic description of its colour. The finest chrysoprase comes from Queensland in Australia, with more found in Tanzania, Brazil and Poland.
It has always had admirers in high places. Frederick the Great of Prussia adored chrysoprase and had it set into tables and doorways at his summer palace, Sanssouci, near Potsdam.

Chrysoprase Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, chrysoprase is a heart chakra stone with a light, youthful energy. It's said to help you let go of old grudges, be kinder to yourself and reconnect with nature and simple pleasures. Many people use it when they're mending a friendship, starting a new chapter or simply wanting to feel a little lighter. It suits spring equinoxes, garden rituals and any fresh start.

Chrysoprase is a heart chakra stone. It's most often linked with Taurus, Gemini and Libra, and it's a traditional alternative birthstone for May. Read more in our May birthstone guide, or find more pairings in our zodiac crystal guide.
How to Use Chrysoprase
- Wear it: a chrysoprase necklace sits right over the heart chakra.
- Carry it: a tumblestone in your pocket for brighter days.
- Bring it outdoors: take it on walks or keep it among your houseplants.
- Pair it: chrysoprase with rose quartz for self-love, or with moss agate for an all-green nature lover's pairing.
Is My Chrysoprase Real?
Natural chrysoprase has a soft, slightly translucent glow, like jelly held up to the light, with gentle variations in its green. Dyed green chalcedony or quartz often looks too even or too bright, with colour gathered in cracks. Chrysoprase is also tougher than glass imitations and feels cool to the touch.
Cleansing and Caring for Chrysoprase
At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, chrysoprase is fine for everyday wear. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Keep it out of strong, direct sunlight and away from heat for long periods, as its colour can fade, and recharge it by moonlight. Our guide to cleansing crystals and guide to charging crystals explain each method.
