There are many compelling legends of the jack o'lantern, with roots in Irish Halloween tradition of carving demonic faces out of turnips. While I won't get into Jack's history here, briefly, pumpkin lanterns serve to guide wandering family spirits home, while scary carvings repel evil spirits. Ideal for autumn, when the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest.
