What Is Azurite Malachite?

Azurite and malachite are both copper carbonate minerals, and they often form side by side in the weathered upper parts of copper deposits. Azurite is the blue one; malachite is the green. Over long stretches of time, azurite can slowly turn into malachite, so a single piece can be a snapshot of one mineral transforming into another. It's found in Arizona, Mexico, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Australia.

Both minerals have a long history as pigments. Ground azurite gave medieval and Renaissance painters a rich blue for skies and robes, and malachite was used for green paint and eye make-up in ancient Egypt.

Natural azurite malachite shows uneven, organic patterns of blue and green, often with velvety or banded textures. It's soft and surprisingly heavy for its size. Very evenly coloured, glassy or lightweight pieces may be dyed stone, resin or reconstituted material.

Cleansing and Caring for Azurite Malachite

At only 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, azurite malachite is soft and easily scratched, so store it on its own and handle it gently. Both minerals contain copper, so never put it in water, never use it to make crystal water or elixirs, and wash your hands after handling raw, unpolished pieces. Keep it out of strong sunlight and away from heat and chemicals, and cleanse it with sound, moonlight or smoke. Our guide to cleansing crystals explains each method.
