No stone captures the imagination quite like Ethiopian opal. This hydrophane mineraloid forms in seams of volcanic ash and rhyolite, and its porous nature allows it to absorb water. When wet, it can become nearly transparent, then return to its luminous play of colour as it dries. With a Mohs hardness of around 5.5 to 6 and water content typically between 6 and 10 percent, it offers a delicate beauty that benefits from gentle care.
